The Remnants of The Viking Spirit

The Viking Spirit by Daniel McCoy was my second venture into Norse "religion" and Mythology. The book is probably as good a place to begin as any when digging into what actually remains of pre Christian Norse beliefs. The book is divided into two sections, the first one hundred twenty pages or so deal with Norse religion, followed by one hundred fourth eight pages of Norse myths.

Dealing first with the myths, McCoy precedes each myth with an introduction to the myth, possible sources, possible Christian and or Middle Ages influence, and an educated guess at how much of the myth might actually be from original sources. This is a nice touch for those who might want to dig further for themselves for a more thorough interpretation.

Norse religion, is addressed in the first portion of the book. McCoy is right up front about Norse religion in that it was never "systematized or codified during the Viking Age", nor was it recorded in a written language. The same can be said for the Viking myths, as the myths were not standardized, and the myths changed over time, and by different influences even within the Viking "nations".

Using an analogy, think of a paleontologist, who finds a smattering of bone fragments, some larger and more complete, some hardly there, others missing entirely, mixed with other fragments of a different creature. He/she then attempts to piece together the original find, based upon incomplete skeletal remains, and then attempts to bootstrap together how that creature lived. That is my impression of the challenge facing the scholars who's goal is to compile Norse religion and mythology in their original forms. McCoy even rationalizes that the reader can invent their own means of interpretation and understanding of the Norse, as the beliefs of the Norse were constantly evolving.

In closing, this was my second venture into Norse mythology. My first voyage was The Norse Myths by Kevin Crossley-Holland, about three years ago. I prefer the Crossley-Holland's work, if for no other reason, that it was my first experience with Norse myths. Rather than preceding his myths with an introduction to each, his note section, following the myths, he deals with each myth. KC-V also provides much more information in his note section for the interpretation of Norse mythology. If one is interested in understanding the Viking world through their mythology and religion, I'd submit that McCoy's book is the place to begin, then read Crossley-Holland's work. After that, if still wanting more, each author provides sources for further research.

An intermediate book for deeper understanding of the basics when you aren't yet ready to study toward mastery

Mr. McCoy clearly did his research and presents it in a straight forward manner. Instead of making you slog through all of the source material he describes the challenges with the source material and then just teaches you.

If you want a book which takes the basic overviews which you can receive in other books to the next level, but you aren't ready to master the source material, history in different locations and multiple related languages... this book is the perfect next step.

This book was very informative. It broke things down in a way that is easier to understand than some of the other Viking books I have. I am a little over half-way through it, but I can already say I would recommend this book. Thanks.

This ethnography explores the community of believers in a series of Marian apparitions in rural Emmitsburg, Maryland, asking what it means to call oneself a Catholic and child of Our Lady in this context, what it means to believe in an apparition, and what it means to communicate with divine presence on earth. Believers fashion themselves as devotees of Our Lady in several ways. Through autobiography, they look backward in time to see their lives as leading up to their participation in the prayer group or in some cases moving to Emmitsburg. By observing and telling miracle stories, they adopt an enchanted worldview in which the miraculous becomes everyday. Through relationships with Our Lady, their lives are enriched and even transformed. When they negotiate institutional loyalty and individual autonomy, they affirm their own authority and Catholic identity. Finally, through social media, they expand their devotional networks in ways that shift authority structures and empower individuals. Individuals engage beliefs, practices, and attitudes both arising from and resisting elements of modernity, religious pluralism and religious decline, empowerment and perceived disempowerment, tradition and innovation, and institutional loyalty and perceived disloyalty to reveal one way of understanding Catholic identity amidst the shifts and flows of modern change.

I felt that the last book, The Castle of Mirrors, was missing some of Ms. Nimmo's usual "zip". It felt like there was a bit of hesitancy in her writing. Of all the books, I enjoyed that the least. However, in The Hidden King, Ms. Nimmo is back to her wonderful, enjoyable form that has made this series so pleasant and charming.

New characters continue to appear, old ones remain and rivalries still exist. A tremendous secret is uncovered - well, several, to be honest. Quite a bit is at stake here, and there are several threads that need to be managed and I found her management to be deftly done.

In earlier reviews I had voiced a concern that the books always revolved around children that the Bloors/Yewbeams didn't want to be found. That stopped in the last book, and continued here. There are no lost children...but someone else is lost, and we know why. In this instance, it makes sense - and that's so important in art. Things need to make sense, because if they don't, not many people will buy the book.

The momentum has returned...and while I said my mouth was dry after finishing the last book, it is nearly drooling in anticipation for the next book. What a magnificent ending! This is an excellent series for its intended audience, blending in the right amount of mystery, intrigue, with a firm understanding of what is right and what is wrong.

Simple But Satisfying

Charlie Bone and the Hidden King is another in a series of fun books to read. Jenny Nimmo is skilled in her storytelling.

The plot is simple, straightforward, and compelling enough to get the reader to the end of the book with ample satisfaction. The Hidden King adds extra elements about those who are endowed with the introduction of the existence of other academies for descendants of the Red King throughout the world.

The battle with the shadow, the continuation of the search for Charlie's brain wiped father, and the introduction of just enough new characters who are good and evil make this book another in the series that leaves the reader begging for the next book to be done sooner.

It is easy to see that Jenny Nimmo is skilled because when her Charlie Bone books come out I put them off as long as I can because I know that once I start reading, I will read the book straight through and then I will have to wait FOREVER, or it seems like forever for the next installment. The fact that I approach these books knowing I will love them and then finish wanting more proves that Nimmo has a gift.

I hope Charlie Bone goes on forever and that Jenny Nimmo gets a movie contract for screenplay adaptations of the series that rivals JK Rowling's deal.

Great Installment to the Series

Took me longer to get around to reading this than I would have liked. However, as always Nimmo's writing is very easy to read, so I zipped through the book. Charlie and his friends (allies) have more of the Red King mystery to unravel this time around. Finally things are happening that I had been anticipating since the first book. (I won't spoil the book for anyone, but I was really happy with the results).

Some great new characters are introduced, who will really add some layers of complexity to other dynamics down the road. The villian of this book--doesn't seem to do as much as he threatens to--Charlie is very effective at stopping him, it seems. Shades of gray are really seen in this book too--which goes really well with the title, characters act in ways you might not have expected them to in the past.

I really love this books, they aren't hard to read and are a much lighter story than alot of their contemporaries (Harry Potter etc). I'd say great for anyone above 3rd grade or there abouts. A very fun series, and clearly Nimmo has more to tell,so I will be eagerly awaiting the next book.

Twelve-step recovery is not just for goys. Taub, a rabbi in the Chabad-Lubavitch movement and cofounder of a Jewish recovery community in Milwaukee, brings a lens of Jewish spirituality to the 12 steps and finds them not only kosher but also helpful in deepening Jewish spiritual life. Citing Carl Jung, he first analyzes addiction as a spiritual problem of longing for God but substituting alcohol (spirits) for spiritual relationship. From there he goes on to trace and emphasize the God consciousness that the 12 steps advocate, and he then offers a careful theological analysis that finds much consistency between recovery and Jewish teachings about God, prayer, forgiveness, and relationships. The œGod of our understanding that recovery talks about is also the œGod of our fathers, he argues. A glossary of rabbinic sources buttresses his own gloss on the 12 steps. Every now and again I run across a book that just grabs me. Rabbi Taub has written such a book. His understanding of the disease of addiction is refreshing. It is obvious that this book is written by a man who has integrated his understanding of spirituality into his personal experience with recovery. Rabbi Shais Taub and his wife, Brocha, were founding co-directors of the Jewish recovery community in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

He currently resides with his wife and children in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and operates Congregation Conscious Contact, a Jewish prayer and meditation group for the enhancement of Twelve-Step recovery.

A Unique and Long Overdue Work That Will Save Lives....

The recommendation from Rabbi and Dr. Abraham Twerski at the twilight of his career alone should be enough to read the book. The book stands on its own merit and to date is the most illuminating work by a Rabbi about the 12 steps and their place in Jewish tradition. Rabbi Taub debunks numerous myths in the Jewish community regarding the 12 steps that have often resulted in devastated families and even deaths due to addiction. Like all good Rabbis, R. Taub writes with the legendary Jewish humor and an erudite respect for the study of Torah by citing sources like the Talmud, Ethics of our Fathers, and the Kuzari. If this book saves even one life then it was worth the effort. It will likely save many lives.

A Must Read

While the title of Rabbi Shais Taub's book rightly suggests that this is a work aimed at Jews in recovery from addiction, the true success of Taub's endeavor is that the book will provide insight and a fresh perspective to anyone in recovery, regardless of religious affiliation. The book exhibits a depth of understanding, both of the disease of addiction, and of the spiritual process of recovery, that transcends religion. Addiction, after all, is a human affliction, not a Jewish one. And recovery from addiction is a spiritual process, not a Jewish process.

And yet, this is clearly a "Jewish" book. The writing, at once conversational and learned, entices the reader with anecdotes, touches on the history of the various 12-step recovery programs, draws parallels from scripture, and provides coherent and inspired guidance on matters both spiritual and religious. Taub is adept at revealing the congruence of the 12-step recovery process, Jewish theology, and Jewish tradition. He convincingly demonstrates, in example after example, that there exists no conflict between Judaism and the 12-step recovery philosophy. Rather, Taub celebrates the fact that the God mentioned throughout the 12-step programs' literature can be the God of Israel.

Taub's book is necessary reading for the Jew in recovery, and is highly recommended for anyone in recovery.

If you are Jewish, this is the only book of its kind for you

Being a Member of the Tribe and in the program, this is the first book that I can honestly identify with and had several A-HA moments when studying the material. Hashem is the G-d of my understanding, and this book was written for me. I grew up in an Orthodox (Yiddish was spoken) home, and most of the things my Dad told me about alcohol addiction were reitinerated in the book. Thank you Reb Taub for your thoughtful insight.

Skip the etext!

This book is your generic Biochemistry book. It is a good read, and it was well thought out when written, however, I am assigning the one star because of the awful online study center that comes with it, MasteringChemistry. Pearson has issues with MasteringChemistry quite often and their customer support is appalling. The etext has worked about 60% of the time, so consider this a fair warning.

If you need to buy the book I understand, but if you are counted one of the lucky that is not required to use MasteringChemistry with this book please choose a different option!
