Excellent method for teaching adult piano students

40 years ago I began learning to play the piano with the John Thompson series. Today I teach piano students, some children and some adults. I have reviewed many of the other methods available. I found some very trite and gimmick oriented. After attempting a couple others, I have gone back to John Thompson's method. I supplement with a theory book and a finger exercise book that enhance the learning experience. The Adult piano book 1 goes at a faster pace than the children's books. That is because the comprehension of an adult is greater than that of a child. I have also discovered that Adults apply themselves in practice more than children. They have more invested (they are paying for the lessons) so they want it to be worth their money. The Thompson book is geared toward classical content without being overly classical sounding. Classical was written to challenge the student. John Thompson has produced a method that is easy to understand, challenges the student, methodically teaches the rudiments of piano performance in an attainable way. I would recommend this book and his course to anyone.

Not a Good Beginner Book

I have been searching for a good book to use to teach adults for quite a while, and I was very hopeful when I found this book and ordered it. I had been using the Alfred Basic Adult Course, which has some good qualities (and I think it's the best of the beginning adult books out there), but I find that Alfred's method of teaching "position playing" means unless I'm very careful in the beginning and assign lots of worksheets and flash cards, most adults have a very hard time learning the notes--the book tells them where to put their hands, and they would rather rely on finger numbers and recognizing patterns to play the song. For children I use John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course, and I love how it teaches one note at a time and stresses rhythm and note values right from the beginning. It moves kind of slow for some students, so I thought it wouldn't work for adults, but I've found that the kids learn quickly just breeze right through the first book in a month and then we get to harder music--but at least I know they have a solid foundation. I was really hoping that since there's already the regular John Thompson course out there, which many adults I know have found difficult to learn from, that this adult course would move just a little bit slower and be more logically laid out. Instead, I found that it moves even faster! Most of the adult students that I have right now would be thoroughly confused if I had tried to start them in this book. I think it would be great for an adult who has had some piano instruction in the past, or who plays another instrument and know basic music theory. I think I will still use this book for some things, it's just not the good beginner book that I was hoping for. What I may do for adult beginners from now on, is start them in John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course, book one, but instead of going on to book two I'll move them to this John Thompson adult course.

I’m an adult beginner, and I find this book is to fast and advanced, I also have Alfred’s All In One for Adults and Complete Piano Player and find those more suitable for starting piano players, but I have seen John Thompson’s Modern Piano first grade which I have ordered and should be receiving soon and I think that is a better starting piano book. I like to learn from and try different books because each does teaches little bit in different ways thus I can learn variety of ways and by the way I’m trying to learn on my own without help of a teacher (more economical) but I also watch lots of videos on Youtube.

Fails to keep its promise: Metric War + Compensation

This book does NOT offer 'A practical guide to valuation' but a theoretical,oldfashioned discussion of the 'Metrics War'and some empirical research on EVA, Compensation and CFROI-Fade.
My rating has got these origins: Empirical research on Compensation,EVA and CFROI-Fade: A+. Discussion of EVA/CFROI: D-. Terminology: D value for 'Hands-on-valuation': F- Structure: F- Style: F-.
This book does contain interesting empirical research on EVA etc, but it does not offer 'A practical Guide to Implementation' because it does not contain a STAGE-Approach. Its terminology differs from any other book I've read, you must often guess, which formulas the authors used, because they did not have the courtesy to express their formulas. Some formulas are wrong nad their discussion of the 'metrics war' betweenn EVA and CFROI lags 5 years behind reality. They attack old methods of CFROI,which Boston Consulting and Holt Value published 5 (!) years ago. They fail to know, that BCG have refined CVA/CFROI and that BAYER. Lufthansa,and VEBA have implemented these refined CFROI-techniques,which are way better, than the old methods, which the book attacks.
Moreover, this book is terrible to read due to a lack of structure, the absence of clear definitions, the lack of formulas, a wordy style,which exhausts your nerves, and many value judgements....

Highly Recommended!

Kudos to S. David Young and Stephen F. O'Byrne, management consultants who largely steer clear of their industry's usual empty catchphrases and superficial hype. Instead, their lucid explanation of the importance of shareholder value takes center stage. The heftiness of EVA and Value-Based Management may be daunting, but most readers will be satisfied with Part I's strategic overview. The concepts reappear in Part II accompanied by a wealth of technical details, calculations and case studies to help finance professionals with nitty-gritty implementation of EVA (Economic Value Added) programs. The book honestly assesses EVA's power to motivate managers, noting that some companies just are not well-suited for this performance metric. We from getAbstract prescribe this book to corporate executives who have overdosed on consultant jargon but still want to drive value growth in their companies, and to finance specialists who seek a comprehensive roadmap to EVA implementation.

Excellent book

As an author, speaker and consultant on these topics, I highly recommend this book. Not only have the authors discussed the pros and cons of a number of approaches thoughfully and concisely, they also expand the level of understanding related to the calculations in an accessible way. Their book discusses both implementation issues and the nitty gritty of the mechanics. In sum, the book takes the reader to the next level of understanding. I highly recommend this book.

About the Author
Michael Glauser, Ph.D., is the executive director of the Jeffrey D. Clark Center for Entrepreneurship at Utah State University, an entrepreneur, business consultant, and university professor. He is the co-founder and CEO of My New Enterprise, an online training and development company. He is also the founder and former CEO of Golden Swirl Management Company and of Northern Lights. Both companies were sold to CoolBrands International. Mike has consulted with numerous corporations in the areas of business strategy, market research, organizational effectiveness, and leadership development. His clients have included Associated Food Stores, The Boeing Company, Department of Workforce Services, Esso of Inter-America, Harmon Music Group, and USANA Health Sciences.

Glauser has held faculty positions at the University of North Carolina, Westminster College, and Utah State University. He has designed and taught courses in business strategy, entrepreneurship, management, and organizational behavior. He has published numerous articles in professional journals and magazines, and published two books on entrepreneurship: Glorious Accidents and The Business of Heart. Recommended summer reading for the small town entrepreneur.

Main Street Entrepreneur: Build Your Dream Company Doing What You Love Where You Live details the bicycle journey of author, professor, entrepreneur and business consultant Michael Glauser as he pedaled across the nation. He made the trip with team members who supported the journey, shot videos, rode alongside him and drove the motor home where they all slept at night. They interviewed successful entrepreneurs who started their companies in small towns, most of which had populations of fewer than 30,000 people.

I was not surprised that these business owners started with a compelling idea. I was surprised that for so many of them, that idea was: "I really like living here. How can I settle down and support my family?" They found answers that often provided jobs to other people in their communities.

Why is Main Street enjoying a resurgence now? Glauser puts it this way:

"Ironically, we can use the same technology that is destroying corporate jobs to live where we want, reach markets beyond our geographical location, and take advantage of the growing preference for smaller businesses over large corporations,"

He interviewed people who sell products and services over the internet, but he also features plenty of bricks-and-mortar business owners who had a knack for supplying what their customers were looking for. (Many of the businesses featured have some connection to health and fitness. When you consider that the bicycle trek from Pacific to Atlantic encompassed 4000 miles via bicycle, it makes sense.)

So much of what I read backs up the country way of life I already know. Small-town neighbors help each other out. While they understand their businesses needs to sustain themselves, small-town entrepreneurs aren't necessarily in it for the money. They know how to access resources without it. That said, some of the businesses featured were remarkably successful.

I enjoyed a theme that ran through so many of the profiles: these people absolutely love where they live. They contribute to their communities, and their little towns love them back.

The book is also something of a how-to manual. Glauser identified common threads in the entrepreneurs' stories to clarify what made them successful. The book includes questions at the end of each chapter to help a would-be entrepreneur walk herself through the process of starting a successful business.

It;'s good advice, and the stories were delightful. So that's my recommended summer reading for the small-town business.

The Roots of American Small Business

Dr. Michael Glauser has really captured the essence of what true bootstrapping means to small business owners in America. His journey across the US led me along, while all the time asking myself questions about how I am running my own venture. Super easy read for a business book, very accessible and incredibly informative. Not necessarily life changing, but worth every bit of introspection you will witness.

About the Author

David Silverman�is Visiting Professor in the Business School, University of Technology, Sydney, Emeritus Professor in the Sociology Department, Goldsmiths’ College and Adjunct Professor in the School of Education, Queensland University of Technology. He has lived in London for most of�his life, where he attended Christ's College Finchley and did a BSc (Economics) at the London School of Economics in the 1960s. Afterwards,�he went to the USA for graduate work, obtaining an MA in the Sociology Department, University of California, Los Angeles.�He returned to LSE to write a PhD on organization theory. This was published as The Theory of Organizations in 1970.

Apart from brief spells teaching at UCLA,�his main teaching career was at Goldsmiths College.�His three major research projects were on decision making in the Personnel Department of the Greater London Council (Organizational Work, written with Jill Jones, 1975), paediatric outpatient clinics (Communication and Medical Practice, 1987) and HIV-test counselling (Discourses of Counselling,�1997).�

He pioneered a taught MA in Qualitative Research at Goldsmiths in 1985 and supervised around 30 successful PhD students. Since becoming Emeritus Professor in 1999,�he has�continued publishing methodology books. David regularly runs qualitative research workshops for five universities in Sydney and Brisbane.�He has also run workshops for research students in Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, France, Sri Lanka and Tanzania. Since 2000, he has done voluntary work with people with dementia. resident in an old people’s home

Besides all this, David's other interests include classical music, literary fiction, bridge, county cricket and�spending time with his�grandchildren.

#129 Not loving your child the same way when they're awake as you do when they're asleep
"Nothing can prepare you for the intensity of feeling when you gaze at your sleeping child. If you were called upon to sacrifice your life for them it would be a lot easier if you could get them to fall asleep and look adorable before you threw yourself in front of the speeding bus, marauding home invader or whatever. Awake, they're a different ball game altogther".

I blind-brought this title - the cover and the title caught my eye - and it's proved to be a delightful discovery. I'm a father of two (soon to be three) and I found this book as helpful as it is hilarious. The best thing about a book like this is, as Jonathan says, that "the greatest danger we face as modern parents is that we'll worry so much about the job we're doing, we'll forget why we're doing it in the first place". I'm sure this book will translate well anywhere in the world and I highly recommend it.
