The book is very informative. There is a big section in the beginning about all the ingredients, how they interact with each other. There is a detailed description with illustrations of different techniques used for preparing dough, and also why the author likes making up recipes using ratios as opposed to other methods. In recipes, dry ingredients are measured by weight ounces, not volume. Unfortunately, the liquid ingredients are measured by liquid ounces, i.e. volume. I hate volume measurements - how accurate is it when you measure off honey? What about all the honey that gets stick to the cup? I do prefer putting a mixing bowl on the kitchen scale, and weigh everything while adding it to the mix, using Tare function on my scale. So, off to the calculator and conversion tables, again. More precise and less measuring cups to wash. Please, please, authors, write your recipes with weight measurements!
Each basic dough recipe is described in detail, with why and how and what to expect and hand drawn illustrations if there is a need for those so reader has the right idea of how to proceed. Then for every basic dough there is a section with recipes using this dough, some savory, some sweet. The variety is great, and there are suggestions for recipe variations, too. For each of the basic dough recipes, author suggest on how to make the dough by hand or using mixer of food processor, if it is possible. The recipes accompanied by photos, which I love.
The book is very well written, and is very informative.

I rarely use cookbooks any more. I can make fruit pies from scratch without a recipe (including homemade crust), I bake muffins/sweet breads weekly, and I can make pizza crust and bread in my sleep. I HATE cookbooks that give too much detail or assume I know nothing about cooking, and the cooking blogs that take a picture of every.single.step. This book is the kind of book I can actually use; actually, the kind of book I dream of.

This book focuses on pastry dough, the next step for someone like me: puff pastries, croissants, pains au chocolat, phyllo dough (!), danishes...I'm so excited. It doesn't cover pasta dough or bread dough. It breaks down the steps into an appropriate level of detail, explains the keys to success for the type of dough, and gives both a traditional ingredients list and a ratio for more advanced cooks. I use ratios a lot, so I know how helpful they can be. For example, with muffins, the quantity I can make depends on how many zucchinis I have (or whatever). One thing that jumped out at me is that the ingredients are listed in terms of weight, not volume, which is definitely a departure from the way most recipes are written. A kitchen scale will be vital to use these.

So how are the results? I tried an apple-pie recipe, because I know how to make apple pies and I wanted to make sure whatever result I got was not due simply to lack of experience. I followed the recipe exactly to make sure I was getting as close as possible to the results intended by the author. So, the pie ended up looking and tasting wonderful; definitely the best apple pie I've ever made. But there were some surprises. First, for some reason I ended up with waaaay too much apple filling, even though I weighed the apples as directed and used a 9" pie pan as directed. I also ended up with some extra pie dough (possibly I rolled it too thin?), though, so I just made a second pie with only a top crust in a smaller pan. I'm definitely not complaining, but it was mystifying. I was suspicious when I was peeling the apples: I used about 18 apples to get 6 lb for the filling. Still, it was cool to learn how to make a neat edge to the pie (never tried that before) and it really was delicious. Oh, and it did not take that long. The pie crust only took me a couple minutes (plus cooling time); max 10 minutes total mixing and rolling time. The filling took longer, about 30 min because of peeling the apples, but still not too daunting. So not EVERYTHING in here is going to be an all-day project.

So the upshot is that this is a serious book. Pretty much everything in here can be bought ready-made, but if you want to learn to make your own, this is what you want. Forget searching the Internet for this stuff; just get this book.

Beautiful book on making all kinds of pastry dough

This book features how to make all kinds of pastry dough from biscuit and pate sucree (sweet pie dough) to pate choux (cream puff), puff paste and on to Danish pastry dough and even phyllo. Personally, I would never bother to make phyllo. But if you want to, the recipe is here.

Not every type of dough is in here, but there is a good overview of the most popular kinds of dough.

The book has wonderful diagrams and photos--perhaps more photos than diagrams and the photos are in many cases full page, generally on the left page while the instructions are on the right. You can see how to shape the dough or what the finished pastry looks like. The book is hard bound on excellent paper, nice binding. This is a pretty book and not too heavy (some cookbooks are way too big and they are hard to keep open on the counter.)

My only quibble with this book is that the "strudel" is not strudel. Nein, nein, nein. Instead, the authors call Danish pastry dough being cut into a jalousie with apple filling--a strudel I know, I know, you Austrians are rolling your eyes. A strudel is dough more like phyllo dough (hinting at its Turkish origins--Viennese cooking took things from the Ottoman Empire during the 1700's.) The dough is stretched out on a table, covering an entire table, often rolled out with a broomstick and then rolled up into layers over a lemon-scented apple filling and baked in a horseshoe shape (to fit onto the baking sheet.) A jalousie is usually puff paste but here it's the related Danish pastry (yeast dough layered with butter) and cut into a lattice to reveal the jammy filling. Nice to eat, but...no way is it strudel. I used to watch a friend's mom make it in her farmhouse kitchen when I was a kid, and it's probably my favorite pastry of all and a royal pain in the you-know to make but so worth it.

This is an odd inaccuracy for an otherwise terrific book on pastry dough. Was it because it's just easier to make Danish? I don't know, but other than that glaring inaccuracy, the book is excellent if you enjoy baking. I love the sculptural aspects of dough and like to make fancy pastry for parties, so I enjoyed this book.

Hot, Sexy, Enchanting and Romantic!

This story really pulled at my heart strings...Yes, it was hot, sexy and erotic; but there was so much tenderness and romance in the story. Not just in bed, but between the characters. The story and the characters pulled me in and after 3 prior Novellas, I have come to know the characters well and love them.

I recommend reading the entire series...a bit bummed that it is over, but it ended so wonderfully.

Now that I have all 4 Novellas on my kindle, I plan to read them in succession.

For a minute or two I was a bit worried that a happy ending might not be achieved but thankfully I was wrong. Great story and even GREATER hot, hot, hot sex! I'm dehydrated just thinking about it!

Dear Reader,I think one of the traps an author should avoid, is writing heroes and heroines who are all the same. Jake is unlike any other hero I've written. He's harder and probably a bit more ruthless. He's been pretty cut by Amanda in the past and in trying to ensure he isn't vulnerable to any more hurt, he hardens himself to her and is at times fairly cutting toward her. However, he does redeem himself. He is there when she needs him the most and does try to understand what she's been through.However, Amanda's story does leave Jake feeling a little incredulous, because she's endured quite a bit herself and he could never have imagined the circumstances she found herself in nor the way they've both been manipulated.They find their happiness...which we also see as they appear in "Roses for Sophie" which is the follow up story about Sophie Hamilton - the woman was once Jake's wife.�I do hope you enjoy it!Best wishes,Alyssa

Fabulous read!

Well, I'm glad I ignored the low ratings for this book and read it on the recommendation of a friend. I was thoroughly enthralled by the plot line and gripped by the questions the author raised. There was so much going on.
I'm not going to give away any plot spoilers, because discovering the reasons why things happened the way they did was part of the enjoyment for me.
Now, having said that I disagree with the low ratings that a couple of the reviewers have given this book, I must agree that the hero turning up at Amanda's husband's funeral did seem rather 'off' at surface glance. However, this said, he did step in and save her from an attack at said funeral which was heroic of him, especially when she was so despised in the eyes of society at that point. I'm not sure that the other reviewers actually 'got' Jake's level of pain. Mm, he was pretty caustic with some of his remarks to the heroine when she was really at a low point, but that was his defence mechanism. I got that. His introspection allowed me to see that he really wasn't a nasty type - in fact he did some soul-searching because of his behaviour - and his character grew because of it. I think the author made it really bad at points and that just made the really good to come extra special. All up, I think Jake was a very strong character, who had really been torn apart and devastated in fact by his break up with Amanda, and he still loved her (but was afraid of that emotion when he believed her to be the sort of woman who would take advantage of that), but didn't want to love her. But...despite all that, he really was there when she needed him and his belief in her allowed her ultimately to believe in herself.
Amanda...Wow, didn't the author put her through the wringer. Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse for her...it did. Then...it did again! OMG. I really felt for her. I felt her pain like it was my pain. And, ouch, some of Jake's comments reeeeeally hurt. But having been to that lowest of low points, it only made everything even brighter and happier and shinier when the resolution came. (And seriously, I believe he was remorseful and I bought that!)
Lloyd...what a pig! What a horrible, rotten, miserable snake in the grass. His death was too good for him.

Writing style - loved the chapter hooks at the end. Loved the dialogue (even that which was cutting). Totally enjoyed the line where Amanda says, "Why aren't you having sex with me?" !!! (Won't tell you how he replies to that one as it will spoil it if you read it)! I thought it was a really easy voice to read and I am now keen to read the other title by this author. You may have some critics, Alyssa J. Montgomery, but you've just won another fan.

Not that bad

Well, there is the whole double misunderstanding, so both H and h hurt each other without any explanations. It might be old, no cell phones to call and find out? No internet to see what is going on in the other's life? They had this fling, she didn't know he was rich, and he was her first, they fall in love, then they both think the other burned each other. She marries another rich jerk to cover for rich guy #2 and to pay for her aunt's medical bills. He thinks she is a gold digger and marries an old exgirlfriend, so the h thinks she lost it for a fling. So there is the double cross for both. He is mean at first but figures it out, and she finally tells him the truth. I just thought the writing was really overflowing and effusive, a little repetitive. There is a HEA, so....

HLB Reviews Echoes of the Heart

I was a little worried when I picked up this book, mainly because the book kind of starts off with a funeral, the funeral of Amanda’s husband. The whole thing sounded so callous, Amanda’s ex showing up at the funeral of her husband, out for revenge? Thankfully, everything was not as it seems. As it turns out, Amanda’s marriage, well not really what one would consider a real marriage in any sense of the word. So it wasn’t like Jake sounds up to rub salt into Amanda’s broken heart over her dead husband, if anything her husband being dead must have been more of a relief than anything else.

I felt bad for Amanda, I really did. It turned out her husband was a bit on the abusive side, and she married him to make sure that someone she loved would be taken care. Basically she gave up her life in order to make sure someone else had a good life, it was definitely an honorable thing to do. I don’t think she ever anticipated it turning out the way it did though. More than that, the guy Amanda did love, Jake, well their whole relationship basically blew up due to misunderstandings and some mingling by outside forces.

Jake, well I didn’t really bond to him all that much, especially in the beginning of the book, Jake came off as such an ass. I mean he approaches his ex at a funeral, completely inappropriate and then propositions her. Later on, he goes on to basically put a price on her in bed, offering her money that she desperately needed if she agrees to sleep with him for a month. She’s clearly in tear, completely fallen apart, beyond unhealthy, and he just can’t help but to bring her down to feeling like nothing. It was kinda hard to read. Thankfully things kind of turn around as the book progresses.

I think the biggest issue I had with the book though was that Amanda and Jake could have solved all of their problems if they had just had a simple conversation with one another. Amanda believed that Jake was seeing someone else when he was with her, and so she thinks he was using her. Jake believes she married her husband because she was a gold-digger who was only interested in money. I almost wish they had had some other kind of issue that needed to be worked out, and not just a case of really big miscommunication.

That being said, it was an easy read, plenty of romance in it, and the two of them definitely turn their lives as the story continues. I think if you like romance stories with exes or ones that have a revenge element to them, then this book might be just what you are looking for.

About the Author
Michael H. Thaut. Ph.D., RMT is the coordinator of graduate studies in music and music therapy at Colorado State University. He earned his doctorate from Michigan State University in 1983, and has served as Director of Music Therapy at the Riverside Correctional Facility. He is the director of the interdisciplinary Center for Biomedical Research at Colorado state, and is an ccompished musician.

Neurologic Music Therapy at its finest

I should start by saying that I am student of music therapy especially fascinated by neuroscience.

Michael Thaut's book is essentially a detailed account of the philosophy, mathematical rationale, scientific evidence, and techniques behind Neurologic Music Therapy, a sub-field of music therapy that utilizes musical rhythm to treat various maladies. Thaut, of course, is essentially the father of Neurologic Music Therapy; this book provides the bases for his entire body of research. ANY MUSIC THERAPIST INTERESTED IN NEUROLOGIC MUSIC THERAPY SHOULD OWN IT AND READ IT!!

In terms of accessibility, to anyone interested in music therapy, neuroscience, or different ways to think about musical rhythm. To the layperson, portions will seem dense; however, any lover of music will get more insight into the power of musical rhythm. Some readers will certainly struggle through the middle chapters on motor optimization. But I encourage anyone who is genuinely interested to stick with it. Thaut's strength is not as a visionary poet per se but as an integrator of various academic fields. He understands how to weave music, math, neuroscience, and medicine together seamlessly.

Much of Neurologic Music Therapy focuses on rhythm-driven optimization of motor control. Perhaps a better title for the book, therefore, would have been "Musical Rhythm, Movement, and the Brain." For readers especially interested in prosody and other areas of music-related linguistics, I would suggest Ani Patel's "Music, Language, and the Brain" as a more appropriate collection of research.

The book is interesting, but completely exhausting. Each paragraph is jammed full of verbiage. As a non-medical reader, I found myself back in middle-school diagramming sentences again.

This book was exciting resources for me. It answered my questions regarding recent experiences of sudden dream recalls after practice singing Baroque music, intensely. When we get older, we start noticing this and that, diminishing or lost. So good side of this state is that when it changes there is a chance of awakening! Great new discovery! Very happy to find this book. Thank you.
