I enjoyed the book

I enjoyed the book, nice read. My only thing was it read very much like Neville Goddard, which was nice of course but I would have rather read it from a different perspective, not so much sounding like another author. Outside of that I enjoyed the book.

It's not for the straitlaced, but sex-positive feminists will find this a provocative, important anthology that speaks honestly to the question of pleasure and how to get it. I spent the last four years trying to convince a particular man to marry me. ("Think what you will! Shock, shock!") You could say we broke up in August of 2000, you could even say we broke up over the marriage issue, but the truer thing to say is that our relationship modulated from marriage track to something less well defined but infinitely more pleasant. I met this man at a time when he was turning decidedly away from marriage, during the emotionally intense period between unofficial separation and legal divorce—not, most experts would say, the best time for forging new relationships, and he would have agreed. I, on the other hand, having been divorced for several years, and having recently extracted myself from a terribly mismatched couplehood formed in the desperate wake of my own divorce, was ready for my second husband, and he was going to be it. Long story short, we fell madly in love despite all the odds and reveled in our passion for a long time and from very long distances. We rendez voused in Vegas and Buenos Aires. I hung an old poster on my bedroom wall from a play called Love Rides the Rails to commemorate our unconventional affair and dedicated myself to becoming the new New Woman—independent, unpossessive, self-sufficient, supportive. I would learn to love lightly, in May Sarton’s phrase, to be passionate without being desperate. And indeed I did develop a more mature sense of self and of relationships through the interlocking processes of wooing him and getting over my need to be wooed, but the bottom line is, I also wanted him to marry me. To prove I was good enough. I wanted to win the prize, be the bride. Ever since my disastrous first run for beauty queen in sixth grade, I had longed deeply and stoically for the trophy and the glory. He wouldn’t give me either. And in my quiet reflective moments, I didn’t want him to. But something about the machinery of the relationship, with all the weight of heterosexual history bearing down on me, usurped my best feminist intentions, pressing my desires for companionship into cookie-cutter shapes—hard edged, straight, inflexible—and I ended up channeling some chick from the fifties, complete with hope chest and china pattern. Worse, I became a Whitney Houston song: "Hold me. Marry me. Love me forever and make me feel safe." Pitching idea after idea—"Marriage doesn’t have to be that way. It can be whatever we (read: you) want"—I debated and finagled, strung long threads of philosophy, drew his attention to relevant movie plots.

Me: Don’t you love me enough to make me your wife?

Him: I love you too much to make you something that small.

Me: You’re right, you’re right, I know you’re right.

I stalked around my house like a cat making a fat tail, thinking this is crazy! Women have way more to lose than men by getting married. If anyone should be holding back, I huffed, it should be me. I knew about (and believed) feminist critiques of marriage, and truth be told, I wasn’t sure I could revise it to please us both. All that notwithstanding, I wanted to marry him anyway. Part of me still does. There is no clear moral to this story. In the time since we "broke up," I have liked myself better, liked him better, and liked us better (on the occasional phone call or email message). I don’t know how long something like this, without a name or any rules, can be sustained before it collapses into the available paths of Exes or Getting Back Together, but it feels like there’s a clue or seed of relationship revolution in the dynamics passing between us now. Outside the prison house of our capital "R" Relationship, we are free to go about the business of enjoying each other once more. Now that I’ve given up the project of convincing him to marry me, I have less to lose by admitting in public that I don’t know how to be a girlfriend or wife and maintain that space between us, that connection without clutching.

I can own up to the noteworthy fact that I’ve never felt as relaxed in a room with a man as I feel right now—alone after midnight, drinking coffee, and working at my computer. Solitude gets sexier and sexier the more I relax into it—like an herbal tea bath—let myself steep.

An intellectual read

This book is great for what it is: a discussion on sexuality. There are many interesting an intellectually stimulating chapters. It's not stimulating, however, in an erotic way-so don't purchase this imagining it to be feminist erotica, or something of that nature, which it outwardly seems like it may be.

Extremely formative pieces of literature

Most of the essays in this book are beautiful, interesting and powerful. There are one or two that I wasn't a fan of, but that's what you get with anthologies of sorts. I'd recommend this to anyone becoming more interested in feminism looking for solid feminist lit. Wish I could have a poster version of that cover, too!

Truly like a conversation with a best friend!

I thought for awhile what to write for this review... There is just so many pieces of this book that jumped out to me. Stumbling across this book, randomly, was for me, like running into a best friend, just when I needed her most.

This collection of "confessions of feminist desire" was one of the best essay collections I've ever read. Almost every essay was engaging and had me considering something through a new lens. I would have loved to read this book as a part of a book club or a gender studies class, debating and discovering even more depth than when I got from the first read.

For me, one of the best parts of this book was how easy it was to relate to the different perspectives - or know someone who could relate. I constantly found myself wanting to lend the book to friends (but not before I was done reading it) so they could read that one particular essay that reminded me of them.

Some of my favorites:
Cutting, Craving and the Self I was Saving, by Jennifer Lutzenberger - This essay offered such a unique perspective of self-injurious behavior and the way in which it truly became a defiant, saving act of agency.

Of the Flesh Fancy: Spanking and the Single Girl, by Chris Daley - A great essay about the power in pleasure and what that means when women mix a little domination into the mix.

The feminist Wife: Notes from a Political "Engagement," by Patricia Payette - This is one of the essays I wanted a few friends to read - it's a great piece about a feminist woman who is struggling with what her marriage (to a man) means for her feminist identity.

Vulvodynia: On the Medicinal Purposes of Porn, by Katinka Hooijer - A great piece about a woman's experience with vulvodynia and the way she experiences her sexuality.

Liquid Fire: Female Ejaculation and Fast Feminism, by Shannon Bell - In light of current "research" disproving female ejaculation, I found this essay particularly insightful and ever-more relevant.

In short - Read this book! Particularly if you are a feminist with an interest in female sexuality.

Her message in a nutshell is “Together we can change a moment, change a day, change a life!” Born and raised in the South, Starla considers herself a true "southern belle." You might hear her say the word "y'all" and if you sit down for a visit with her, she would most likely offer you a glass of sweet iced tea. Starla lives near her family along the sunny Gulf Coast of Alabama. Apart from her outreach, Starla is co-owner of Southern Rich's, a family business that showcases southern inspired products and services. Aside from writing, speaking and other outreach endeavors, she enjoys entertaining and cooking for family and friends. Her favorite past-time in the fall is college football. In spring and summer, she enjoys tending to her vegetable garden. A JOURNEY worth taking!

"Have you ever been in a situation where you feel you've done all you know how to do, have done the right thing and still find yourself stumbling along your path in the dark?" This then, is the perfect book for you! If you haven't been in this situation then this is the perfect book to help you understand others who are struggling! This is also the perfect book to GIVE to others who may need help in lifting themselves out of the hurtful experiences that manage to exist in life!

Starla does the most exquisite job of winding us around the beautiful 'Southern' countryside of her heart and taking us on a journey of her honest self reflection. She does this in such a way that many of my book page corners are bent up and my pages are marked with red pen as I learn about myself and want to remember her wisdom.

You will relish her little stories of past people, places and events and how she weaves them into morals to help us here and now. She tells us about her little freckle-faced childhood and the woman she has become despite the many trials that were thrust upon her. Even though we've never met outside of the pages of her book, I love my new family with Maw-Maw, Paw-Paw, mama Rich and Josh. All of their lives and wisdom helped form the pages of Starla's heart and therefore mine. This book is truly a gift of the heart and one journey you should definitely take! I would give it 10 stars! Highly recommended!!

I appreciate the title of this book very much. It says all about its contents.
Journey Within My Heart
It’s a book about Journey. Starla Rich was 50+ when writing this work and she had quite a life journey behind her.
The word Within indicates it’s about our internal world, not some travel guide. It talks about the things which are most basic and valuable for humans: emotions, memories and experiences.

I had the most problems with the My part of the title and the book. Starla doesn’t preach about generalities. It’s a book about her life, her journey and her experiences. It unfortunately may narrow the circle of readers, but it provides the level of insight into the human soul impossible otherwise.

And it’s all about Heart. Her transparency is beyond amazing. She opens the gate to her heart and shares what’s inside. She is not afraid to become vulnerable in order to encourage others in their life journey.

And in this era, such a reflective title is so rare! As an author myself, I know all too well the temptation to use tricks and slogans to enchain potential reader’s attention. Starla Rich is above that.

Why “My” may cause the problem…
Let’s go straight to minuses of the book, so we can delight in its positives later on.
This book is deeply personal. So deeply in fact, that it may thwart a reader from wading across the ‘personal’ part to the ‘universal’ one.
This is the first book of this author and it shows here and there. The paragraphs are much, much too verbose for my taste. Many times I was desperately looking for the break in the stream of words to catch my breath and just ponder what I’ve just read. In fact that was my biggest issue with this book.
Maybe it was just the impression provoked by the length of individual paragraphs, but in my opinion, Starla rambles too much. She could cut some corners here and there and go to the point sooner.

Those two issues make it relatively hard for me to through the beginning of the book. And it is the most important part! If the reader will be willing to wade through the introduction, he can endure some wandering about and linger for what’s later on. But if not…
I went through this initial blockade only because I knew something about the author in advance, before reading the book. If I hadn’t, I don’t think I would have found the motivation to do so. For me, the “My” part was the reason to keep reading. For someone who doesn’t know the author, it is more likely to stir “And who cares?” reaction and giving up on the lecture
And that would be a shame, because this book is good. No, it’s not good, it’s wonderful. No, it’s not; the proper word is “Great.”

Language
English is not my first language, but even I can appreciate the skillful craftsmanship Starla has over words and sentences. Her language is artful, subtle and beautiful. Reading this book is like listening to soothing music. She doesn’t just tell the story, she paints it with her words, so vividly that I couldn’t help seeing it happening through my own eyes.
She narrates a few times abject events from her past in the way that you can feel her pain and simultaneously be far away from it in time and space.
She is an artist of the written word. Reading “Journey Within My Heart” is a joy in itself.

By the way, I fell in love with the South just imbibing its pieces through the author’s writing.

Layers
But it’s just the first, superficial layer of this book’s virtues. The other one is openness and transparency. Starla shares her personal story with total strangers with courage and divine lack of fear.
I’m a “self-analysis” fanatic. I spend at least 10 minutes every day writing down an analysis of my own self. But I’m amazed by the depth of Starla’s thoughts about seemingly trifling encounters or scenes from the movies. Mundane, daily situations for her are inspiration to ponder the greatest mysteries of life.
This personal approach separates the book’s message from resemblance to a stiff sermon. Many times I couldn’t help but nodding in agreement with her conclusions drawn from these personal tidbits.

Wisdom
And all I said about the book so far is just another layer. Because the core of “Journey Within My Heart” is wisdom. The further you go into the book, the greater enlightenment you experience.

I believe wisdom is transforming one’s own experience into meaningful lessons. The author experienced a lot in her life, both good and evil. She encountered it in others and in herself. That makes her so relatable to us all. However her ability to digest a meaning from these encounters is extraordinary.

She taught me about the realms of the Heart: relationships, self-love, self-pity, courage, self-examination and divine providence through her own example. She provoked me to search for similar lessons in my past, in my soul.

And in the end she fulfilled her mission. She encouraged me.

Only halfway through and _MUST_ review this amazing book!

I wanted to wait until I finished this book to review it. But I just can't wait! From being compelled to tears within the first several pages, to being totally in the grip of the storytelling of Starla Rich's difficult relationships, to the birth of her child that fueled the birth of her courage to stand up for her own life, this book has already made an impression on my life and given me the impetus to continue my journey to my own heart.

Do your heart a favor and read this lovely book. You will be encouraged, enlightened, and emboldened by her courage and wisdom. Very highly recommended!!

Such a great book!

At the first time, I was unsure about how useful this book would be.
I have been reading this book on my kindle about a month and I just found that this book made me learn a lot from reading it.
I would like to recommend this book for all the beginners for php and other web-developing purpose. As a non english speaker, I thought that it could be hard to learn from english written books but this book has very easy explanation and also pictures at proper timings,
I strongly recommend you to start learning php with this book. :-) Thank you Alan!

Inspiring and practical overview

This book was a great match to my needs. I knew a good amount about html, css, and javascript but there were things I wanted to do beyond the client side, like understand how a database connects to a website. The book contains numerous, short code samples that actually do things and I've already reused some of them to understand (firewall, etc) quirks of my own environment. I very much like that I now have working code samples which perform key operations; that's why I said the book offers a _practical_ overview.
I felt the book is _inspiring_ because, for the effort of reading a relatively small book, I now feel empowered to launch into my own designs - and I have those working code samples to prove or disprove an approach.
Returning to _practical_, the book describes in sufficient detail how to obtain and use public domain tools, tips on debugging, where to get further info and forum help. The suggested tool set comes in "wampserver" but the book also describes the debug facilities embedded in typical browsers. I like, too, that the author has made himself very accessible and has emailed to his registered readers a video on using various tools.
This book works very well on my Kindle.
BTW, I purchased a larger book to serve as a PHP reference and I'm happy in retrospect that I didn't use it as an introduction to PHP.

I wrote my own site with this book in 7 days. I also got PAID for it.

Using this book I changed 8 of my sites into PHP sites and created my very first MySQL DB. In response to another poor post I saw here I might add that AT THE AUTHOR'S SUGGESTION IN THE BOOK, I added the code to protect against SQL injection. I had some issues with a little of the code and actually had to change POST to GET in order to accomplish my needs. I went online for a search and I was surprised (although with all the self-righteous programmers who are clearly better than me, just ask them, I shouldn't have been) how often a newbie would ask for help with a snippet of code and several users would pounce on them about 1. RTFM n00b and 2. Your code is unsecure, protect from injections or the world will end!!!

Here the author shows us how to code with the bare minimum, then after we understand it, he shows the risks and what needs to be done to protect the code we have written.

There were other original Hubbard inspired beliefs rejected by the new cadre of Scientologists. The most important was that the genetic material of the human race had been degraded by beings outside of physical space and time with plans to control the universe. Scientology then devolved in two major directions. First, the established church disassociated itself from the upper level secrets of Hubbard's legacy and built a real estate empire of renovated, high-quality church facilities. These are intended as vehicles for expansion when public acceptance of the religion can be achieved. Second, a variety of splinter groups developed to continue the traditional forms of psychological therapy known as "auditing." Some of these groups practice a brand of belief which is even more extreme than the current church. Lucifer's Bridge covers the time period during 1988-1989 when Scientology morphed into its present form. Thus a simple definition of Scientology is almost impossible at present. In its basic form, Scientology created its own definition of a spirit. It also tried to expand the definition of electricity to the behavior of an immortal entity seeking self-willed incarnation. This has been construed by the majority as mere Goety. However, to understand its true nature and Hubbard's real intent, a review of the material in this book is essential. Hubbard's most intense secrets have no supporting scientific evidence and are thus classified as fiction. An examination of these provide the foundation for an analysis of his psyche and the source of the violence manifested in the current Church of Scientology. Hubbard was a science fiction author. He developed Scientology acting in the role of the mythological Lucifer. Hubbard's final personal battles in his mental cosmos reveal an inner fear of personal domination by space aliens walking among us on earth. Is Scientology then a religion? On the one hand, it is based on duplicity. A serious investigation of the basis of Scientology also reveals a paradox. Hubbard tried to unify eastern and western religious traditions into a synthesis of belief. He even implied that his aura extended to the Buddha of 2,600 years ago. Since Hubbard rejected the Sage's fundamental doctrine of "impermanence," this cannot be supported. On the other hand, Scientology outlines a personal salvation. This is based on a tiny but powerful flow of electrical current which Hubbard claimed to have discovered. Thus his teachings revolve around the release of massive amounts of energy trapped by lack of consciousness and distorted perception. Hubbard's solutions to mental and physical problems are thus unique. Eager to be enskied, followers of Hubbard are led to believe that social and political problems persisting into the 21st century can be solved by the application of his techniques. Helpful Deconstruction Tool for Former Members

Though I find the writing to be rather "quick, down and dirty" in simply stating the author's opinions/hypotheses/findings (about various things relating to Scientology, other religions and how they relate to Scientology) quite sparse in explanation, it's still okay with me. I appreciate the fast pace. I can verify his statements and conclusions myself.

The book is helping me a lot to untangle my involvement and mindset about it all. I'm not finished yet but so far, it's 5 stars for me. The author is coming at this from a different angle from all the other books on Scientology I have read so far. It's a page turner.
