Tony Wagnercurrently serves as an Expert In Residence at Harvard University s Innovation Lab. Previously he has worked as a high school teacher, K-8 principal, university professor, and founding executive director of Educators for Social Responsibility. Tony is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences and the author of "Creating Innovators" and "The Global Achievement Gap".

Robert Kegan is the William and Miriam Meehan Professor of Adult Learning and Professional Development at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and author of The Evolving Self and In Over Our Heads.

This book was introduced in my doctoral class. I ran with it. It has every information and strategies to help school leaders become great leaders. Easy and very coherent read. The content is very applicable in schools and classrooms. It is for leaders who want to affect change in their schools

Of all of the books I've read for my school leadership program, this one resonates the most. The ideas have depth, and there are practical strategies for leading school change that take into account the need to look at our personal stumbling blocks and organizational complexity. I will definitely re-read this book and anticipate returning to it as a school leader.

About the Author
Hugh D. Young is Professor of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. He attended Carnegie Mellon for both undergraduate and graduate study and earned his Ph.D. in fundamental particle theory under the direction of the late Richard Cutkosky. He joined the faculty of Carnegie Mellon in 1956, and has also spent two years as a visiting Professor at the University of California at Berkeley. Hugh's career has centered entirely around undergraduate education. He has written several undergraduate-level textbooks, and in 1973 he became a coauthor with Francis Sears and Mark Zemansky for their well-known introductory texts. In addition to his role on Sears and Zemansky's "College Physics," he is currently a coauthor with Roger Freedman on Sears and Zemanksy's "University Physics,"

Hugh is an enthusiastic skier, climber, and hiker. He also served for several years as Associate Organist at St. Paul's Cathedral in Pittsburgh, and has played numerous organ recitals in the Pittsburgh area. Prof. Young and his wife Alice usually travel extensively in the summer, especially in Europe and in the desert canyon country of southern Utah.

Robert M. Geller teaches physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he also obtained his Ph.D. under Robert Antonucci in observational cosmology. Currently, he is involved in two major research projects: a search for cosmological halos predicted by the Big Bang, and a search for the flares that are predicted to occur when a supermassive black hole consumes a star.

Rob also has a strong focus on undergraduate education. In 2003, he received the Distinguished Teaching Award. He trains the graduate student teaching assistants onmethods of physics education. He is also a frequent faculty leader for the UCSB Physics Circus, in which student volunteers perform exciting and thought-provoking physics demonstrations to elementary schools.

Rob loves the outdoors. He and his wife Susanne enjoy backpacking along rivers and fly fishing, usually with rods she has build and flies she has tied. Their daughter Zoe loves fishing too, but her fish tend to be plastic, and float in the bathtub.

Physics Solution manual

I thought that this book was going to have the solutions to all the questions from the physics book, but it is only the solutions manual to the questions from the answers that are already in the back of the book.

Good Review

This is a good study guide. It gives the actual working solutions to the problems. The only reason I did not give it a five is that it only has a selected number of problems instead of them all. The ones it has are explained quite well. If your professor dosen't give you a solution then this is the next best thing to get a answer.

Not Very Helpful

Amazon has a wonderful service. Fast shipping , fast delivery even though I selected standart shipping. The book is brand new as advertised. But it's not very helpful. The author may have some master degrees so his solutions are usually complicated and hard to follow :) Most of the time, I just use it to check the answers.

About the Author
John Chaffee, Ph.D., is Professor of Philosophy at The City University of New York, where he has developed and directs a Philosophy and Critical Thinking program that annually involves 30 faculty and 4,500 students. He is a nationally recognized figure in the area of Critical Thinking, having authored leading textbooks like Thinking Critically, as well as many professional articles. In developing programs to teach people to think more effectively in all academic subjects and areas of life, he has received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Ford Foundation, the Annenberg Foundation, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. He has been selected as New York Educator of the Year and received the Distinguished Faculty Award for Diversity in Teaching in Higher Education.

Decent but not a great read

I read this for enjoyment, not for a class. I found the topics suited to an entry-level philosophy student, but for this purpose it does a good job of explaining the central viewpoints from which philosophers can approach a subject.

That said, these types of entry-level books are better when they include a chronological approach to philosophy. I saw jumps between topics and even within topics which seemed to ignore hundreds of years of thinking and debate.

As a cursory overview, this book delivers. As a middle-level book, the writing begins to falter. Seasoned philosophers will probably want to stay away from this one.

Thought it was great

Really great book!
Why? Well, as a college student books can be very pricey, even used books when they aren't in great condition. I received this book fast, in great condition, and for very cheep. My teacher allowed us to order whatever edition and this edition was a lot cheaper than the newest one. The newest one was almost 200 dollar's.
I also loved this book because it was very informative. I still use it even though the class is over because it's packed with some great ideas on how to be a critical thinker, which is essential to philosophy.

I got this book for my apprenticeship. It has a lot of old school tips and tricks for a beginning student and from my earlier training this book was still used by some journeymen/women. The more recent editions involve new retrofitting and ecofriendly demo. This 3rd edition still uses most of the same methods found in the new books. I wasn't disappointed.

Book condition: Fair, used, suffered water damage on my end. Hard cover bound, �1997 (in my opinion this book has "journeyed" out, which makes it experienced)

Readability: Intermediate, simple, and very detailed. Has diagrams, tables, glossary, index, unit sections, pictures, etc.

Level: Carpenter Apprentice or refresher

If u have not seen the newer Koel books, i suggest researching that first by comparing the two. After all, this is your knowledge on the line.

The definitive text...

This book is generally considered to be the best and most comprehensive carpentry textbook. It's a must for the professional and highly recommended if you're a do-it-yourselfer. I know it's expensive but, because it touches on all aspects of the "master craft," it will save you from buying a specialty book (concrete, finish, framing, etc.) every time you go to the home improvement store. This is also the text that is used by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters to train all of its apprentices.

Excellent book for workers and homeowners.

This was one of my textbooks while studying construction in college. In truth, I loathe that I sold this thing back...buy it and hang onto it, as I have yet to see another book on carpentry that covered as much ground as this one did. This is an "easy read" too, with ample pictures and diagrams. The version/edition of this textbook I used came with an interactive CD for computer use, the CD was pretty worthless and just was a carbon copy of what was in the book already in print form, but it's there if you need it I geuss.

In The Nature of Rights at the American Founding and Beyond, Barry Alan Shain gathers together essays by some of the leading scholars in American constitutional law and history to examine the nature of rights claims in eighteenth-century America and how they differed, if at all, from today’s understandings. Was America at its founding predominantly individualistic or, in some important way, communal? Similarly, which understanding of rights was of greater centrality: the historical "rights of Englishmen" or abstract natural rights? And who enjoyed these rights, however understood? Everyone? Or only economically privileged and militarily responsible male heads of households?

The contributors also consider how such concepts of rights have continued to shape and reshape the American experience of political liberty to this day. Beginning with the arresting transformation in the grounding of rights prompted by the American War of Independence, the volume moves through what the contributors describe as the "Founders’ Bill of Rights" to the "second" Bill of Rights that coincided with the Civil War, and ends with the language of rights erupting from the horrors of the Second World War and its aftermath in the Cold War. By asking what kind of nation the founding generation left us, or intended to leave us, the contributors are then able to compare that nation to the nation we have become. Most, if not all, of the essays demonstrate that the nature of rights in America has been anything but constant, and that the rights defended in the late eighteenth century stand at some distance from those celebrated today.

A Gem of Legal History

This collection of essays by leading historians of the time surrounding America's founding is invaluable to anyone who is interested in understanding much of the terminology that was "in the air" during that period.

Whether in pamphlets, sermons, bills of rights, constitutions, letters, or speeches the words used in the run-up to the colonies' split from Great Britain cannot be understood in a "self-evident" way (as some present-day academics would have us believe). The essays in this volume offer important contextual analysis when it comes to figuring out exactly what the Founders meant when they spoke of "rights" and what this meant for the cause of revolution and the founding of a new nation.

If you want to begin to get a grasp on the legal philosophy of the Founding era then this book should be at the top of your list. No one should attempt to tackle this area of legal intellectual history without surveying these writers and their works here. Many speak today about the rhetoric of the Founding without actually attempting to understand what the Founders themselves meant when they used words like "rights."
