Metallica, the seventh-biggest recording act in American history, are consummate musicians – but it wasn't always that way. The San Francisco-raised Burton, born in 1962, pushed the band to new musical levels with his musical training, songwriting ability and phenomenal bass guitar skills. Across three albums – Kill 'Em All (1983), Ride The Lightning (1985), and Metallica's undisputed masterpiece, Master Of Puppets (1986) – Burton's awe-inspiring playing, derived from a unique blend of classical and punk approaches, received worldwide recognition from fans and bass players alike. He was the first heavy metal bassist since Black Sabbath's Geezer Butler to regard the bass as a lead instrument, delivering intricate live solos based on classical fugues and even laying down a solo track on Metallica's debut album.

Cliff's life was short but influential; his death was sudden and shocking. At the age of just 24, he was killed when Metallica's tour bus overturned on a remote Swedish mountain road in the early hours of September 27, 1986 for reasons which have still not been ascertained: he was crushed to death after being thrown from his bunk through a window. The driver, who has never been identified, told the rest of the band that the bus had hit black ice, leading to the accident: singer James Hetfield refused to believe him and has often spoken publicly about his doubts. With Cliff's death, Metallica's most critically acclaimed period of activity ended. They went on to record huge-selling albums, but by their own admission never pushed the creative envelope as radically as they had done in the first four years of their career. In 2006, a group of dedicated Metallica fans unveiled a memorial to Cliff at the site of his death: the cult of Burton grows year on year, with bassists of many musical styles (even outside heavy metal) acknowledging his influence.

About the Author

Joel McIver is the bestselling author of Justice for All: The Truth About Metallica which has been translated into 9 languages. He has written for Rolling Stone, The Guardian, Metal Hammer, Classic Rock, and he is the occasional guest on BBC. He is currently the editor of Bass Guitar magazine. Classic Rock magazine has called him "by some distance Britain's most prolific hard rock/metal author." He wrote the official biography of the world's biggest death metal band, Cannibal Corpse and co-wrote Megadeath's bio from bass player David Ellefson.

A three-star book about a five-star guy

Cliff has always been my favorite member of Metallica and, given his untimely death early in the band's career, coupled with his not giving many interviews, he's always been a bit of a mystery man as well. Cliff needed a book written about him, and I'm glad this author took on the task. The book's heart is in the right place as it pays righteous dues to the influence Cliff had within Metallica and to his cool, focused personality, all the more awesome given his young age. The author clearly did his homework and spoke to a good many people, including not only Metallica members and associates, but also Cliff's friends and bandmates from pre-Metallica days and his girlfriend Corinne Lynn. Besides the personal details, the author also goes into some educated detail about Cliff's bass playing, while making an effort (as he explains) not to go overboard with the geek stuff.

All in all, a great subject and not a bad book. So, why only three stars? Couple things. Although the personal stories about Cliff from those who knew him well are the best parts, the book often devolves from being the story of Cliff to being the story of Metallica generally. I realize some background is necessary, but there's a bit too much at times - it seems almost like padding in spots to make the book long enough. Example: There's an account of how, after Metallica's first big US stadium show, James Hetfield and a friend got really drunk, threw food at audience members, trashed the dressing room, and later wrote obscenities on the seat of another friend's white pants. This story goes on for pages, and the only thing it has to do with Cliff is that (as the author recounts in like, two lines) Cliff refused to participate in the food throwing and trashing. Multiply that by about two or three stories per chapter. Not what the book was advertised to be.

Also, the writing style tends to be needlessly repetitive, a fact the author even notes in places with comments about how he knows he's mentioned such-and-such before but is going to say it again. The author in general injects too much of himself and his opinions into the book, when I really just wanted to hear people who knew Cliff talk about Cliff. Finally, there are very few photos of Cliff in the book, mostly in the front; the chapters are headed by a b&w picture of Cliff but it's the same picture for every chapter. This seems especially weird since several of the folks interviewed at length for the book were photographers and talk about photographing Cliff, or Metallica when Cliff was in it. So, how come we don't get to see more of these pictures?

I'm glad somebody wrote a book about Cliff, may he rest in peace. I just hope this isn't going to be the only one written.

A very fine perspective on Cliff's life and contributions to Metallica

Full disclosure before getting into this review: I became a Metallica fan in 1996 with the Load album and had never heard of Metallica, or listened to any of their songs, prior to that. That also means that I never saw Cliff perform live, and didn't fully learn about him until after my conversion into a Metallica fan. So it was great to pick up a book that described who Cliff was as a person, and what he contributed to Metallica.

This book paints Cliff as an all around nice guy, and a very talented musician. I was amazed to learn that it wasn't just Cliff's natural talents that allowed him to produce the sounds he did as a bass guitarist. He actually had circuitry installed in his bass to help make it sound the way it did. Fascinating! I also liked learning about how Cliff would record his parts separate from the other band members and how that allowed him to more accurately follow the rhythm tracks laid down by James.

I also learned a lot about how Cliff joined the band. Previous books on Metallica made it seem like Metallica thought Ron McGovney sucked in the bass role and simply replaced him. in fact, while the band did intend to do just that, they also were very cruel towards him and Ron decided to beat them to the punch by quitting before they could fire him.

Lastly, the author considers how Cliff might have reacted to Metallica's change in sound in the 90's, by arguing that he was into the type of "greasy, bluesy" music the band put out after the Black Album. Although I personally find such statements reassuring, at the same time, nobody knows for sure because Cliff wasn't there. So .... *shrug*.

But all in all, this is a great book for Metallica fans, regardless if you're old or new school. Cliff was a mastermind and that makes it all the more sad that he died due to a freak accident.

Long live cliff

I've been a fan of cliff burton since 1984, there is no other bass player like him and can play like no other. If you're a fan like me there is no question that you should get this book. The author did an outstanding job this book, there were lots of personal experiences of cliff that I didn't know. The book tells lots of experiences from friends, family, musicians, and co-workers, even from his at the girl friend. I couldn't put this book down, it was almost like closure for me, I wouldn't play bass today if it wasn't for mr. Burton. I hope this review inspires you to get the book. If you're a fan of burton or metallica, get it ! This book was by far better than Dave mustaine's autobiography . Long live cliff \,,/ \,,/

Now, years later, Daniels, still with a mind full of anger and betrayal, is a member of the U.S. Anti-Terrorism Task Force, and he's tracking what he's sure is an American cell of terrorism, though he can't get a handle on who makes up the cell or what such a network plans to gain by conducting acts of terror against its own country.

At this point Daniels and Riley collide--he wanting her to get out of the picture, for fear she'll tip off suspects in his much broader case, and she convinced there's a huge story on preventing cancer cures that needs to be exposed.

They suddenly realize, however, that they've become targets of very determined assassins--actually the Cell itself, now aware that between them, Mike and Jennifer have enough information to at least briefly complicate their multi-trillion-dollar power plan.

After nearly being murdered in Chicago, Mike and Jennifer head into the North Woods of Wisconsin, unaware of the satellite and computer-equipped black Lexis not far behind. The satellite fix leads the Cell assassins straight to their location, but, because of Jennifer's knowledge of the area and Mike's marksmanship with the various guns they've accumulated, they escape once more.

They now confront two issues: Can they reach a rendezvous point with Pete Dillard, a former Marine helicopter pilot whose life Mike saved in Desert Storm? Dillard, now a U.S. Senator, flying his own plane, would take their materials back to Washington, immediately make them public and open hearings. Also, before they are assassinated themselves, can Mike and Jennifer figure out exactly who is behind this well-financed, high-tech, lethally professional operation determined to destroy America.

Metaphor and mystery

Roger Whitlow provides more than a story of intrigue and conspiracies if one chooses to dig deeper. In the white hot, sultry scenes of sex and violence, he metaphorically situates the story in ancient themes of greed and desire. We are led to the mysteries of the brutality of sex and the orgasmic nature of violence as the characters work out their individual struggles from old, festering wounds that tug at tired lives. The quest for both personal and institutional power permeates the landscape Whitlow so boldly offers. He doesn't merely tell a story; he provides the reader with a bodily experience, invoking all the senses and plunging the reader into an intricate web of conspiracies, jealous cravings, emotional turmoil, harsh memories, hot sexual encounters, and vicious physical violence. The pace is fast, the pulse is deep and hard, the story raw and courageous. I encourage those who might typically not read novels or suspense stories to try this on. Whitlow surprises the reader at every bend.

Fast-paced thriller/mystery that keeps you guessing

The American Cell is a real page-turner due to the fast pacing and compelling storyline. There's something for everyone: shadow conspiracies, political intrigue, sexy characters, action-packed shoot-outs, interesting medical science, and a mystery that keeps you guessing until the end. The author weaves in subtle, evocative details that you really immerse you in the world of the characters. Great for your next air travel.

About the Author

Dr. Chi N. Thai is an Associate Professor at the College of Engineering of the University of Georgia where he lectures undergraduate and graduate courses on Systems Modeling, Multispectral Machine Vision and Robotics.�His formal training includes B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and M.S. in Aerospace Engineering, both at Northrop University.�He obtained his Ph.D. in Agricultural Engineering from the University of California at Davis.� He had done research in adaptive gear shifting for agricultural tractors, optimal hull design for boat tractors, characterization and modeling of quality of agricultural products using spectrometry and hyperspectral imaging. In recent years, he expanded his research and teaching interests into developing embedded plant health sensing packages for land- and air-based autonomous robotic systems and also in applying robotics to STEM teaching and learning at all age levels.

About the Author
Robert Fischer is President of Assets Protection Associates, Inc., a security consulting firm established in 1986. He earned his Ph.D. in education administration from Southern Illinois University in 1981. Dr. Fischer has served as a consultant to many organizations, including publishers, private security firms, retailers, and school districts. Dr. Fischer is a member of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, the American Society for industrial Security, The Academy if Security Educators and Trainers, and the International Police Association. He recently retired from his positions as the Director of Illinois Law Enforcement Executive Institute, a project of the Illinois Law Enforcement and Standards Board, and as a professor of law enforcement and justice administration at Western Illinois University.

Not obsolete - Newer versions are available though

I disagree with whomever wrote this text was outdated. There are many valuable concepts in this book and I can't think of anything in this book that can't be applied to security today. It may be missing some of the new technologies but everything in it is still current.

It is a good read and well organized. I picked this up for an Intro to Security class in college.
