Funniest Book I've Ever Read!!!

Derwood Inc. is one of the funniest books that I have ever read!

It's got a mystery and comical family adventures all intertwined together!

The best scene in the book is where the kids are sledding down a dangerous hill on a mattress while being chased by bad guys.

During the chase, the male protagonist, Jack, yells to a nosy neighbor, "The adoption agency is after us!"

The dangers with the "Fifty Ton, Mile Long, Giant Killer Octopus" are also not to be missed!

About the Author

Mary Connerley is Associate Professor, Department of Management, Pamplin College of Business,Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Before coming to Virginia Tech, Dr. Connerley worked for five years with the Executive Development Program at the University of Iowa where her responsibilities included evaluating the entire program for thoroughness and continuity and serving as liaison between executives and faculty. Dr. Connerley has taught courses at the undergraduate, MBA, and doctoral levels, including Principles of Management, Human Resource Management, Staffing, Training and Development, and Managing Diversity in the Workplace. She has also been involved as a Management and Professional Development Program Facilitator. Her most recent programs have dealt with acquiring and keeping good employees and managing a multi-generational workforce.

Dr. Connerley has been an active researcher and has published articles in journals such as Personnel Psychology, Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, Human Relations, as well as others. Her current research interests include various aspects of the staffing process, performance evaluation, and diversity. Honors for Dr. Connerley include being selected as a Multicultural Fellow at Virginia Tech, receiving a Pamplin College of Business Teaching Excellence Award, and receiving two Citations of Excellence for her research.

Paul B. Pedersen is a visiting professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Hawaii and professor emeritus at Syracuse University. He has taught at the University of Minnesota, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and for six years at universities in Taiwan, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Pedersen was also on the summer school faculty at Harvard University, 1984-988 and the University of Pittsburgh “semester at sea” voyage around the world, spring 1992. International experience includes numerous consulting experiences in Asia, Australia, Africa, South America and Europe, and a Senior Fulbright award teaching at National Taiwan University 1999-2000. He has authored, co-authored or edited 40 books, 99 articles, and 72 chapters on aspects of multicultural counseling and international communication. Pedersen is a fellow in Divisions 9, 17, 45 and 52 of the American Psychological Association.�

This book is well written and easy to read. It should be required reading for anyone wanting to work in diverse environments. It gives well researched information and clear guidelines as to how to use this information.

Too little for too much

I was shocked to see how tiny this book is, both in size and content, especially given the hefty price tag of $50! It is a bit outdated, as many of the studies are from the 90's. In this evolving field, more contemporary studies are important. And that price tag? Why so expensive? It was a terrific disappointment. Perhaps it would have been less so, were the price a more reasonable one. Save your money and find this information online.

Just the right blend of fun and hard clues

These puzzles are rated medium difficulty (which I consider to mean hard for most non-addicts), and modern, which means lots of puns, plays on words, and misleading (but actually fair) clues. (Example: "Got milk?" in Persian -- Meow.) There is normally a themed "long answers" subject, although some are just potpourri. I personally like this style of puzzle a lot, because these clever clues give you a chance to keep thinking and work out the answer, rather than forcing you into a situation where you simply don't know the answer to some obscure factual question. I would say this is a very good puzzle book for someone who likes puzzles for the adventure and the intellectual fun.

1 Across: Best Crossword Book I've Bought in Awhile!

I have a confession to make... I'm a crossword puzzleaholic!!! They both stimulate and calm my mind, so there's pretty much no situation in which I won't sit and do a crossword. I love them on planes, especially.

- These puzzles are the perfect level of difficulty for me. They're not at all easy, but I can finish (or come close to finishing) each puzzle so I get that sense of accomplishment. It's also a ice ego boost, y'know? ;)

- The book has a spiral, which is awesome! SO much easier to prop the book on your knee and solve a few clues when you're not fighting to keep a stiffly bound book open.

- The clues are from this century. Look, I like old movies and classic references as much as the next person, but when you have a puzzle book that mixes references from multiple decades, clues like "star of a top cop show" lose all meaning. The clues in this book are current enough to make sense without being reliant on abhorrent things like reality stars or gossip columns.

Beware: Some people are obsessed with the type of paper their puzzles come on. This is pretty cheap old-school color booking-type paper. Rough and beige in color. It's fairly flimsy, but I don't mind it at all. After all, I'm not framing my tiny mental masterpieces!

All in all a great book and I'll be buying more in the series!

Good puzzles--different binding would be more convenient

Typical Sunday Los Angeles Times crosswords. If you look forward to the Sunday puzzles, and don't want to wait seven days for the next one, this would be a good collection for you. 200 puzzles (with answers, of course) in a paperback format. My only complaint is with the binding. The puzzles would be MUCH easier to do if the book were spiral bound rather than the normal paperback binding. This makes it extremely hard to fill in the spaces near the spine while at the same time keeping the cover and other pages out of your way.

About the Author
Manu S. Pillai was born in Kerala in 1990 and educated at Fergusson College, Pune, and at King s College London. Following the completion of his master s degree, where he presented his thesis on the emergence of religious nationalism in nineteenthcentury India, in 2011 12, he managed the parliamentary office of Dr Shashi Tharoor in New Delhi and was then aide to Lord Bilimoria CBE DL, a crossbencher at the House of Lords in London in 2012 13. That same year he was commissioned by the BBC as a researcher to work with Prof. Sunil Khilnani on the Incarnations history series, which tells the story of India through fifty great lives. The Ivory Throne is Manu s first book.

Meticulously researched. Informative and engaging.

When I picked up the book at a Literature Festival, I knew for a fact that this is going to be magnificent. A few days into reading, and I knew I wasn’t wrong. I was hooked onto it. The effect the writing had on me was almost immediate. Every time I opened the book to read it, the characters came out alive. I grew so fond of the characters, that I had them on my mind even after I closed the book. That, in all probability is the power of portrayal. After the actual event in history nearly 100 years ago, life has once again been bequeathed to them through the book. These individuals now hold a very distinctive place in my heart, especially the protagonist- Queen Sethu Lakshmi Bayi. Effortlessly, I was able to make a personal connection with the writing and without a doubt, every other reader would too. The effort that has been put into the book is incredible and nearly unimaginable. 6 years of massive research and here is an outcome that is so majestic. The book promises to leave you educated on the history of Kerala while making sure it holds your interest till the end. This beautiful and engaging rendering of the story of the Queens of Travancore is a must-read and I highly recommend it!

About the Author
Laura Lippman (b. 1959) is an author of detective fiction. Born in Atlanta, she was raised in Baltimore. Her father was a reporter for the Baltimore Sun, and Lippman followed in his footsteps, working at the paper until 2001. She used her journalistic experience as a foundation for her first novel, Baltimore Blues (1997), which introduced her longtime series character, Tess Monaghan, a reporter-turned-private detective. Dynamic, strong-willed, and smart, Tess was one of the early exemplars of a “tart noir” character.��Since Baltimore Blues, Lippman has published ten more titles in the series, as well as standalone books including Every Secret Thing (2003) and Life Sentences (2009). She has won nearly every major award for the genre, including the Edgar, Shamus, and Nero Wolfe prizes. Her husband, David Simon, is also a journalist-turned-crime-writer, best known for creating HBO’s The Wire. Lippman’s most recent book is And When She Was Good (2012).�

One of the best in the series

The Book Thing is yet another eBook short in the Bibliomysteries series; a series that I've really come to love. There's nothing like a good short story, and when its subject matter is books, then it's even better.

The author tells us the story of a neighborhood children's bookshop in North Baltimore, where her trademark heroine Tess Monaghan, buys the goods for her daughter, Carla Scout. Tess thinks that it's great that places like this still exist, and she does everything she possibly can to support it.

However noble her actions may be though, the bookshop is in jeopardy, not only because of the competition from the eBook market, but also because someone is stealing many books every now and then, without ever being caught. Tess decides to work the case pro bono, in order to set things right. So she sets shop in the shop, and lies in wait for the perp to show his face.

She doesn't spend all her time there though, so while the tale unfolds, we get to follow her to her everyday walks around the neighborhood, we meet someone who's widely known as the Walking Man, and we learn some things about the pessimist owner and the optimist sales girl of the bookshop.

As the story progresses the plot takes a weird turn that even makes Tess stand still for a moment in utter surprise, as the perp is just someone who's trying to do something right, the wrong way. And he, just like the heroine, has the love of books as his driving force.

If you expect too much action and a deep-seeded mystery in the book at hand, perhaps you'll be disappointed. However if you want to read a well-written story about lonely souls, and not so desperate people, who find refuge in the pages of the books, you'll absolutely love it. This is one of the best volumes in the series. 4.5 stars.

"The Book Thing" is one in a series of stand-alone mystery stories from MysteriousPress.com in which books, bookstores, libraries, or manuscripts play a central role. The Bibliomysteries are short stories, not full length novels.

Expensive illustrated books are disappearing from the children's bookstore in Tess Monaghan's North Baltimore neighborhood. Since Tess wants the store to survive so her daughter will have a place to shop for books, she agrees to investigate despite the owner's inability to pay her. It doesn't take Tess long to discover how the thefts are being committed.

While Tess tries her hand at social work and matchmaking before the story is done, the tale's best moments belong to the thief rather than the private investigator. He is drawn with uncommon understanding and compassion. The thief prompts Tess to think about the lives that books live, they ways they die, and the purposes they serve.

Given the uncertain future of brick-and-mortar bookstores, the story is notable for its condemnation of tacky readers who get free advice from bookstore owners and then download the recommended books into their eReaders from online retailers. The story also has a telling message about parents who burden their kids with their own childhood favorites (potentially killing the child's desire to read) rather than letting their children discover their own treasures. In short, this bibliomystery isn't much of a mystery, but it's a fine examination of the role books play in our lives.

This was a short and sweet story, which I enjoyed; loved the references to "To Kill A Mockingbird".

This was a short and sweet story, which I enjoyed. I'm surprised that Tate wasn't aware of The Book Thing already as it seems to be a well-known institution in Baltimore. As for the debate between e-books and physical books noted in this short story, I was a holdout for a while and didn't buy a Kindle or iPad. But then when I went on vacation to Greece 3 years ago, I decided that I couldn't carry many physical books with me. I wanted to read on the cruise (wonderful to sit in the sun on deck while sailing the Aegean Sea) and on the plane rides, but when it came to choosing between clothes and books, I figured clothes were more essential. That's when I finally broke down and got a Kindle to take on the trip with me. However, I do have physical books as well at home. As for the references to "To Kill a Mockingbird", I actually named my son after Jem because I admired that character ever since I read the book in high school. (But I named my daughter after a Shakespeare character instead of Scout.). Finally, we also have a crazy neighbor who my husband and I call Boo Radley. So now I'm wondering: I never thought I had much in common with Tess, based on the previous books, but maybe I do have more in common with her than I thought.

A must for home stagers

I'm switching careers and have decided to try the home staging business. After reading about the author and her experience, I ordered this book and I'm glad I did. It provides the exact information I was seeking. It's informative and written in an extremely easy style to follow. Although some of the information is obvious/basic - (decluttering) - it is important enough it probably should be emphasized. The author even provides a list of potential names for your new business. She also includes a question and answer section in which she provides good guidelines for potential situations. I purchased another book at the same time I ordered this one and there is no comparison. I would definitely recommend this book.

A MUST have Reference for Home Stagers

As an interior designer, I was looking to expand my business into the home staging arena, but wasn't really interested in spending thousands of dollars on one of those 3-day courses. After reading many reviews, I decided to purchase this book and I am so glad that I did! I think the author provides an in-depth guide about home staging as well as steering you in the right direction to operate your own home staging business. I found her book to be very informative and thought she provided great tips and examples. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in running their own home staging business. Also, I would recommend her other book, Rearrange It! - How to Start and Grow a Profitable Home-Based Redesign Business - In my opinion, I think you would need both these skills to successfuly run either business.

A Brilliant Read and Learning Source

This book is remarkable. This is an extensive course in house staging. It covers every facet of the business and industry.As I am from Australia I was unsure of the relevance to my situation but can state that this is suited for any one thinking of getting into the staging industry anywhere in the world. The book misses nothing. In addition to teaching Home Staging it also teaches business techniques, marketing, interior decorating, buyer psychology, seller psychology. With plenty of photo examples, business forms and question and answer examples this was the best read on this subject I have come across. The author addresses every possible situation and the training is written as if she was in the room giving you one to one training. As there are no means of doing any kind of courses covering this industry in Australia, I was lucky to find this book and training and believe I have saved myself a lot of money in doing so. This is far more thorough than any of the interior design courses I have done. This book is straight to the point with many hints and ideas from the author. It is well written and is easily understood by any reader.
