Ryland Blackinton, Lead Guitarist of Cobra Starship, on Using the iPad to Make Music
Lead Guitarist Ryland Blackinton of Cobra Starship What music app do you use most on your iPad? Probably the Korg iElectribe
What do you use it for?
I have a bunch of basic pattern beats I saved in there. They're good to use on the fly to get an idea down quickly.
How does the iPad fit into your work in the studio and on the road?
I use my iPad for music apps and to look up videos and songs for inspiration. I try not to "surf the web" on the same screen I'm producing on. It can be distracting. Although I play Street Fighter on my iPad, which doesn't help.
What does the iPad offer you musically that wasn't possible/more difficult before?
For me it's most useful on the road when you want to lay something down fast and you don't have any keyboards near you. I have a lot of Korgs at home and the apps have a familiarity to them that I like.
Can you explain an iPad music trick or technique you use often?
Sure! A cool way to utilize the Korg i-ms20 app for iPad is to track a C note on your favorite patch and export it to Logic, or whatever you produce on, and put it on a piano roll to trigger it via MIDI.

A helpful guide to the basics
By Michael J. Edelman
The iPad is a marvelous device for music making, with the power of the biggest desktop computers of only a few years ago and a flexible display and control surface that can morph into any sort of display and control you can imagine. There are hundreds of music apps available for it, too, but that does leave the would-be music producer wondering what apps to buy. Even at only $0.99 or $1.99 for the cheapest music apps, it's easy to spend a lot of money trying to figure out where to begin.
Author Ben Harvell has created a basic manual for iPad music makers, based on what he believes to be the most useful and most flexible music apps. The main tool he uses is Apple's own Garage Band, and it's hard to argue with that choice. Garage Band is amazingly cheap (under $5) for what it delivers- multi-track recording, signal processing, sampling, midi instruments, automatic "smart" drums, strings and guitar, and a lot more. To this he adds a few simple apps for processing (like Ampli-Kit), notation, sound export and composition, and a few hardware devices- external keyboards, audio interfaces, MIDI control, microphones and so forth. Most of his software suggestions are inexpensive, but he does have a few favorites, like Korg's iElectribe that run a bit more. (I should note that iElectribe costs a tiny fraction of the hardware Electribe, so even at $20 it's still a bargain.) His ideal choices may not be yours (although everyone using an iPad for music will want Garage Band) but following Harvell's advice is not a bad place to start.
Harvell's writing is clear, friendly, and concise. He gets right to the point, and walks the reader through various examples aimed at the musician with no previous recording or production experience. The illustrations are, for the most part, excellent. It's not exhaustive in its treatment of music apps- there are several I use that don't get mentioned- but then, it's not trying to be a complete catalog of music aps. It's intended as a starter manual for the iPad music beginner, and at that I think it succeeds very well. If I have any complaint at all about this book it's that the typography and the design are downright ugly, but that doesn't really have much effect on the usefulness of the book. Someone looking for a real in-depth guide to Garage Band might be better served by GarageBand '11 Power!: The Comprehensive Recording and Podcasting Guide or How to Do Everything with GarageBand, but the musician looking for a general introduction to music production on the iPad will find this book to be a good place to start.

Great reference for those new to music on the iPad
By JohnnyOnTheSpot
I first checked the e-book version out from my local library and ended up buying a copy for myself before having to return the library copy because I didn't want to be without the book. I'm new to the iPad and the sheer volume of apps and hardware for making music with one was really overwhelming. Ben has written a clear, understandable and timely book that, for me at least, turned the rather daunting goal of integrating the iPad into my music making into something fun and relatively simple. With over 10 years of writing/editing "about Apple and digital creativity" as he puts it and a long history of musicianship (not to mention some of the rock star expert sources referenced frequently in the book) Ben definitely qualifies as a subject matter expert, and it definitely shows. The material is presented clearly and understandably without being dry or boring. He includes QR codes throughout the book proving links to the apps being discussed and/or sound clips to illustrate what is being discussed. And when I contacted Ben with a question about the book he replied with the answer within a day! Your results may vary, of course, and there's always a degree of subjectivity when deciding what apps and hardware solutions to recommend but I'm very pleased with his recommendations and the book as a whole.

Everything in one book
By MJZ
I was originally looking for a book just on Garageband for ipad and came across this one. A great deal of this book is dedicated to how to work in Garageband, but it's got a lot of other useful info as well. I really liked the first part about the apps. While I have several music making apps already, I found some really good ones in this book, you know the kind I'll actually use! The sections on Garageband, are broken down into sections so it's easy to find just what your looking for. It covers everything from using the "smart Instruments" to recording acoustic instruments and vocals. The final part of the book walks you thru making your first song. It starts with planning it out and going all the way to mixing and editing and adding vocals. I can't imagine a more complete book on the subject. This book is very well suited for musicians who want to record their own instruments to someone who just wants to have some fun making music using all the amazing tools Garageband has to offer. I was brand new to recording with GB and after spending an afternoon with this book I have already started recording. GB has a lot to offer and this book will help you make use of it. Very glad I purchased this and highly recommend it!
