Composed of six brief, brilliant, dense chapters, the book draws on a vast assortment of myths, fictions and religious texts, contending that the critic can begin to comprehend the mind of the terrorist through an examination of Dionysus or Lear or Faust. Like the work of Umberto Eco, the book is learned, ironic and complex enough for numerous rereadings, particularly if the reader wants to form the kind of counterarguments the book implicitly demands. Indeed, its provocative circumspection may leave both liberals and conservatives sputtering. Though too dense and allusive for a general audience, Eagleton's "metaphysical" and aesthetic approach to the crisis of terror provides the kind of philosophical context to current events that will satisfy fans of Derrida, Lacan and Eagleton himself. Seven out of ten....

This is very much a philosophical reflection on the idea of terror, as it is on concepts such as life, death, love, desire, good and evil. Eagleton asks us to think critically about what these words imply, instead of accepting interpretations which we may have inherited.

It is extremely theorectical, very much academic and written in a style can feel like the author is deliberately trying to exclude readers. It is full of specific literary references - most of the time it doesn't make a huge difference if you don't know the work in question,but other times it does. Eagleton slows down for nobody, nor is he one to offer explanations for certain things where they might be needed.

This book is not about international relations, foreign policy or the differences between civilizations. It is a reflection, and as such it works very well indeed. Overall a commendable piece of work.

An Excellent Work About the History of Terrorism

Terry Eagleton has written an excellent, albeit dense, history of terrorism. Eagleton's argument is that terrorism is actually a modern method that has its roots in the French Revolution.

Eagleton's work is both well reasoned and researched. If you want a good, solid general survey about terrorism history, then this is the book for you.

The sin of moral equivalence

As early as the first page of this work Eagelton shows his political colors. He accuses the Pentagon and the United States of being guilty of terror in the same way as those Islamic groups which deliberately target civilians are. This is an irresponsible and mistaken claim.

In fact Eagelton's method of mixing literary references with matter- of - fact happenings give a sense that he has no real experience , no true understanding of the subject. The gruesome cruel deliberate targeting of civilians for political purposes is not much illuminated by abstruse and complicated jargon- making.

Terror's is not holy. It is Evil.

Margaret Cole had no choice but to agree to the terms that her new boss, William Tanner set before her. She didn't like it at all, but she was loyal to her family. She would do what she had to do.
William Tanner is the new CEO of Cameron Enterprises, who have bought out her old company, Worth Industries. He met Margaret six months ago at a masked Valentine's Day ball, and after one kiss at midnight, was unable to forget her. He discovered who she was, and now he knew just how to make her his. He may come to regret it.
I truly enjoyed Margaret's character, not only for her loyalty to her brother, but also her loyalty to her co-workers. She had earned not only their respect but their praise as well. She was independent, determined, and at times, outspoken. She couldn't help the attraction she felt for William any more than he could. All she had to do was convince his family that she was his fiancee. Piece of cake...right?
The story developed steadily, and easily caught me up in it. I did have a hard time putting it down. This story will draw you in emotionally. I like that William really did seem to care about Margaret and what would please her.
For any romance reader with a little business thrown in. His family was terrific.

I Thought the last book in the series was my favorite but it was by far this book. the characters seem so real. I really enjoyed reading this book it Was Hard to put down. on to the next one in this series.

An excellent starting point

This is an excellent Chumash but it must be made clear that it is a "beginners guide", a starting point to the Torah. If you only want one Chumash in your library then make this the one.
Being a convenient, easy to read, concise one volume Chumash, the author had no choice but to narrow his commentary. After all, you cannot fit the waters of the ocean into a bucket. One must understand that the commentary does not even scratch the service of inner meaning of the text. It is simply a minimum line or put in a positive way, a springboard to further study.
So I suppose it is only fair of me to suggest another Chumash that one can advance to. "The Call of the Torah" by Rabbi Elie Munk is a five-volume set also published by Artscroll. Rav Munk combines both the classic commentaries of Rash"i, Ramba"m, Ramba"n etc, the "peshat" of his teacher Rav Hirsh and also the more hidden Torah of Kabbalah. This as well as his own beautiful and intelligent ideas, adds up to a Chumash that is a must for all Jews that wish to delve just that little bit deeper.

Fast becoming the new standard Chumash in synagogues

I used to use the Hertz Chumash that is common in most Conservative and Orthodox synagogues. Now when I am in synagogue, I go looking for a Stone Chumash, which I find far superior to Hertz. Unfortunately, others do as well, and the supply is not yet up to the demand. Now I own my own.
Not only is the Stone Chumash an easy-to-read translation with fascinating commentaries, it also includes various tables and charts, such as geneology charts and timelines of events, and drawings of items in the Mishkan, which help give the Torah more meaning. For those who want more depth, the Hebrew text includes all of the traditional commentators in the margins.

Profound and Magnificent

The Stone Edition Chumash includes the Hebrew text of the Pentateuch (the Torah), Onkelos's Aramaic translation and an English translation, commentary, charts, Haftaroth, Megilloth and other relevant synagogue readings.
The Hebrew text is clearly pointed and easy to read, beside it is Onkelos's translation, beneath it is Rashi's (Rabbi Shlomo Yitschaki's, 11th c.) commentary (in Hebrew, "Rashi" script). On the opposite page is the English translation and commentary. The translation is accurate, modern, clear and mellifluous. Marginal notes here introduce, summarise and set the context. The English commentary is quite extensive, inspiring and captivating, and carefully selecting from and integrating the classical medieval commentaries of Rashi, the Ramban and Ibn Ezra, among others, and many, many modern, Orthodox sages. The word of God is the concern here, and its illumination is pure and profound.
The book is also aesthetically beautiful in every respect.
This edition is, in my opinion, the best single volume translation of and commentary on the Torah available.

The frog that will be saved through real creativity, real green thinking, and real risk taking

Few books by economists are easily understood and appreciated by lay people. But "The Boiling Frog Dilemma: Saving Canada From Economic Decline," is one of those very few books. And it's not just a book for Canadians, though they are the primary audience for Todd Hirsch, the senior economist for ATB Financial in Calgary, Alberta, and Robert Roach, the vice president of research for the Canada West Foundation. There is a very great deal Americans can learn from this often amusing, sometimes confrontational (though in a "polite" way, as many Americans would expect of Canadians) work that stresses the value of real creativity (and not just stereotyped Bohemian artistic creativity), real green thinking, a willingness to confront fear and take risks, and cultivating the ability to know that failure often does occur but success never occurs without real effort. What also sets this book apart from other "how to fix our economy" books is the emphasis on education, education that includes large measures of exposure to the arts. It is good to see trained economists see the real economic and social value of the arts in people's lives.

Highly recommended for all who want to save Canada as well as the United States from economic (and perhaps even social) decline.

The Boiling Frog Dilemma explores six subjects necessary for Canada to grow successfully into the future.
